Los Angeles—SIM Digital, one of the leading suppliers of digital production equipment and post production services in North America, will be a major exhibitor at the 2013 Cine Gear Expo May 31st through June 1st at The Studios at Paramount in Los Angeles. Showcasing its breadth of services, SIM Digital will be demonstrating leading edge solutions for every aspect of feature, television and advertising production, from the camera lens to the screen.

SIM Digital will also host a Cine Gear After Party on June 1st beginning at 4:00 p.m. at its newly-remodeled offices located at 738 N. Cahuenga Boulevard in Hollywood, just a ten minute walk from Paramount Studios. In addition to food, drinks and live music, the event will feature a fully-functional, end-to-end workflow demonstration.  The workflow will be similar to one the SIM Digital is currently maintaining for the television series Hell on Wheels. The party is co-sponsored by Fujinon, Shape, Pro K Solutions, ALT Systems, Rosco Laboratories, Tecads and Zeiss.

SIM Digital Acquires Canada’s PS Production Services

Los Angeles—SIM Digital, one of the leading suppliers of digital production equipment and post production services in North America, today announced that it has acquired PS Production Services Ltd, one of Canada’s largest rental houses for lighting, grip, generators, digital cameras and dolly equipment.  The move is the latest in a series of acquisitions by SIM Digital and is part of an ongoing global strategy to be the most comprehensive provider of motion picture and television services in North America.

Founded by the late Doug Dales in 1972, PS Production Services serves U.S. and Canadian motion picture and television producers through offices in Toronto, Vancouver and Halifax and has more than 130 employees.  Since Dales’ untimely death in 2010, the company has built on his legacy and continued to experience significant growth.

MTI Film Adds XAVC Support to Cortex

HOLLYWOOD—MTI Film today announces that its Cortex product line now includes full support for Sony’s recently-developed XAVC recording format. XAVC is included in Cortex::Control Dailies DP, Pro, Studio and Ultimate editions and in the Stream, Pro, Studio and Ultimate editions of Cortex::Convey. Support for Sony RAW and SR Master formats is already included in all Cortex editions including the FREE edition of Cortex::Control Dailies.

Sony’s XAVC format, which is H.264 based, is a dedicated 4K format developed to foster 4K production in areas beyond feature films, including television, documentaries and commercials. The format provides a cost efficient digital imaging eco-system for 4K and high frame rate content. Sony’s F55 and F5 cameras include the XAVC codec.

Codex Powers ARRIRAW Workflow for French/Italian Thriller “The Lookout”

London, UK –  The Lookout (Le Guetteur), the new French-language crime thriller from Italian director Michele Placido (Crime Novel, Angel of Death) is a riveting tale of bank robbers, a sniper and hard-nosed cops that plays out in the meanest streets of Paris—it’s also one of the latest films to employ the Codex/ARRIRAW workflow.

Cinematographer Arnaldo Catinari shot the majority of the film with ARRI Alexa cameras, capturing ARRIRAW data on Codex Onboard M recorders. Codex Transfer Stations were employed on-set to process dailies, so that media from each day’s shoot could be delivered to the film’s editorial team, without the need for additional post-house processing. The result was a workflow that delivered imagery of the highest quality, while facilitating a production schedule of just nine weeks and a production budget of 14 million euros.

IBC News: Codex Vault will Support Sony F65 Workflow

London, England –  Codex, the leading developer of digital media recorders and media management systems for film and television production, today announces that the Sony SR-D1 SRMemory reader module for the Codex Vault will be shown for the first time at IBC 2012 in Amsterdam on the Sony booth (12.A10) and the Codex booth (11.F41).

“Our onboard recorders have become the industry standard but our aim with the Vault is to provide a standardized, streamlined workflow for as many cameras as possible, whether or not they use our onboard recording technology. “Bayonet” Captured on Codex

Independent short uses Codex Onboard recorder to create “studio quality” look.

LOS ANGELES—Bayonet, a short political thriller from Bergen Films and Director Gregory Horoupian, recently completed principal photography using digital recording technology from Codex. The short was shot by cinematographer Lyle Vincent using an ARRI Alexa Studio camera paired with anamorphic lenses and a Codex Onboard M recorder.

According to Horoupian, whose previous credits include A Perfect Execution and Solitude, Bayonet was inspired by the classic political dramas of the 1970s, and he noted that he, Vincent and DIT Matthew Martin conducted extensive camera tests during preproduction to find a modern version of the deep, rich widescreen look of those films. “Ultimately, only the combination of the Alexa Studio camera and anamorphic lenses was able to create the images we were striving for,” he explains.

The Codex Onboard M recorder provided Horoupian with practical means to maximize image quality by facilitating the capture of the uncompressed RAW output from the Alexa Studio’s 4:3 sensor.  “No other recorder would have allowed us to capture the amount of data generated by the camera,” he said. “It was essential to our look.”

Codex Powers ARRIRAW Workflow for “Riddick”

Montreal’s Michel Trudel introduces Codex Onboard recorders and Transfer Station to Eastern Canada.

LONDON—Michel Trudel Inc., operators of Canada’s largest production studio, supplied Codex recording and workflow technologies to the long anticipated sequel to Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, tentatively titled Riddick . Codex Onboard recorders were used to capture ARRIRAW data from two ARRI Alexa cameras. A Codex Transfer Station was used for on-set dailies processing, back-up and deliverables production.

As with the franchise’s first film Pitch Black, Riddick united director David Twohy and cinematographer David Eggby, ACS. Principal photography was completed on four stages with full sets. The sets described alien landscapes that filled the entire floor space and allowed Eggby and his crew to shoot 360-degrees. One stage alone was rigged with more than 500 feet of green screen material.
