4K Restoration of David Lean’s Masterpiece Receives Top Honors;

Sony Pictures’ Grover Crisp Recognized for “Outstanding Achievement in Restoration”

CULVERY CITY, CA  – The newly-restored, 50th Anniversary Directors Cut of David Lean’s 1962 masterpiece Lawrence of Arabia took home the award for “Best Archive Restoration/Preservation Title” at the tenth FOCAL International Awards held May 2nd in London. The 4K restoration of the film was completed last year by Sony Pictures Entertainment under the direction of Grover Crisp, EVP of Asset Management, Film Restoration and Digital Mastering for SPE. Crisp also received a special, individual award for “Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Film Restoration and Preservation.”

Colorworks Applies its Touch to “Fresh Guacamole”

DI facility provides theatrical mastering services to animated short that has been short-listed for an Academy Award.

Culver City, Calif.—December 10, 2012— Colorworks recently provided post production services for Fresh Guacamole, an animated short from writer/director PES that was recently short-listed for Academy Award consideration. The facility performed color grading and DCP mastering so that the short film could be screened in theaters as part of the qualifying process for Academy Award consideration.

Sony Pictures Studios Launches Clean Truck Fleet

Studio Takes Early Action to Offer Cleaner Transport to the Entertainment Industry

Culver City, CA – Sony Pictures Studios has upgraded its fleet of diesel, generator, and camera trucks to achieve compliance with California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations years ahead of schedule, offering its customers in the entertainment industry cleaner and more efficient transportation.

The Studio has invested in new clean diesel and gasoline trucks – a replacement of over one-third of its fleet – to reduce exhaust emissions and improve fuel economy.  In addition to investing in new vehicles, the Studio has installed clean diesel filters on its fleet of generator and camera trucks that reduce local air pollutant emissions by more than 85%.

Colorworks Evokes Classic Martial Arts Films in Grading Universal Pictures’ The Man With the Iron Fists

The new action-adventure film presented by Quentin Tarantino marks the directorial debut of RZA, best known as a founding member of the hip-hop group Wu Tang Clan, and stars RZA, Russell Crowe, Lucy Liu, Rick Yune, Jamie Chung, Cung Le, Dave Bautista, Byron Mann, Daniel Wu and Pam Grier.

Colorworks Checks into “Hotel Transylvania”

DI facility teams with Sony Pictures Imageworks to ready 3D animated feature for theatrical release.

Culver City, Calif.—October 2, 2012— Final post-production work for Hotel Transylvania, the new animated comedy from Sony Pictures Animation, was recently completed at Colorworks, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s digital intermediate facility. The facility performed final color grading and stereoscopic 3D finishing for the film, released in the U.S. release on September 28th.

The project involved close collaboration between Colorworks and Sony Pictures Imageworks, which created the film’s spectacular animation. Image files were exchanged between the two facilities, via direct fiber link.

Colorworks Helps Give “Sparkle” Its Glow

Colorist John Persichetti helps cinematographer Anastas N. Michos, ASC recreate the look of Motown.

Culver City, Calif.— Colorworks, Sony Pictures Entertainments’ digital intermediate facility, recently completed final post work for Sparkle, the new movie from Tri-Star Pictures, starring Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston. Digital intermediate colorist John Persichetti worked under the supervision of director Salim Akil and cinematographer Anastas N. Michos, ASC in performing final color grading for the film.

A remake of the 1976 film of the same name, Sparkle tells the story of three sisters who form a singing group in 1960s Detroit. It is a family drama that plays out against the glitz of Motown and the political and social tumult of the era.

Studio’s Visual Effects Artists, Stereographers, Colorists and Sound Mixers Came Together to Apply the Finishing Touches to the Summer Tentpole

Culver City, Calif.— Teams from across Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) came together in a close-knit collaboration for the production of Columbia Pictures’ superhero blockbuster The Amazing Spider-Man, currently in worldwide release in 2D and 3D. Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI) created many of the film’s stunning visual effects sequences, the Sony 3D Technology Center consulted on the film’s stereography, Sony Pictures Post Production provided sound services, and Colorworks, SPE’s digital intermediate facility, performed final color grading and editorial finishing.

“A tentpole release on this scale really puts the studio to the test, and challenges each group to set the bar higher than ever before – from the teams working on the sound stages to the technicians in the DI suites. To a large extent, The Amazing Spider-Man was created at Sony Pictures from image-capture to answer-print and I’m proud to acknowledge that the excellent work on our lot sets a new standard for creative and technological collaboration,” said Gary Martin, President, Production Administration at Sony Pictures.

Colorworks Posts “Eldorado” Shot with F65 Camera

Culver City, Calif.— Colorworks provided 4K post production finishing services for Eldorado, a motion picture short, produced by Sony to demonstrate the capabilities of its next generation F65 CineAlta™ digital motion picture camera. Eldorado, which debuted at NAB 2012, was written, directed and lensed by Curtis Clark, ASC, who also directed The Arrival, a short film shot with the F65 last year.
